Rain expected to begin in November

Magetan is among the areas where rainfall is expected to begin in November, according to the East Java Climatology Station of Indonesia's meteorological agency, BMKG. Its September 30 forecast, reported by detikJatim, predicts a late start to East Java's 2026/2027 rainy season and a shorter season than normal.

The forecast places the rainy-season peak in February 2027 for 69.2% of the province's seasonal zones, or 47 of 74 zones known as ZOM.

Flood, landslide and wind risks

The greatest flood risk is in Kartoharjo, Karangrejo and Barat, three lowland subdistricts near rivers, BPBD Magetan head Eka Radityo told Espos.id on November 3. He identified Plaosan, Poncol, Panekan and Sidorejo, on Mount Lawu's slopes, as landslide-prone. Strong winds could affect almost the entire regency.

BPBD records reported by ANTARA News Jawa Timur on January 16, 2026, show 238 disaster events in Magetan during 2025. The total included 107 extreme-weather events involving strong winds, 99 landslides, seven river-overflow floods and one fire, as well as 17 animal search-and-rescue operations and seven human search-and-rescue operations.

Warning systems and round-the-clock response

Magetan operates 11 early warning system units, according to BPBD's prevention and preparedness section, as reported by ANTARA News Jawa Timur on January 16. Nine landslide-warning units are installed in Poncol and Plaosan, while Kartoharjo has two flood-warning units.

The regency government has allocated Rp3.8 billion for infrastructure and disaster handling to support mitigation, Radityo said on November 3, according to Espos.id.

Radityo also said BPBD's Disaster Management Operations Control Center (Pusdalops-PB) and Rapid Response Team (TRC) are on 24-hour standby. The agency is strengthening the capacity of Disaster-Resilient Villages (Destana) to improve community preparedness.
