Traditional textiles meet international buyers

The Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (IN2MOTIONFEST) X Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week (JMFW) featured 1,785 creations. Local brands and designers, including members of Bank Indonesia's Indonesian Sharia Creative Industry (IKRA) program, highlighted Wastra Nusantara, Indonesia's traditional textiles.

The collections incorporated batik, silk-screen work, handwoven textiles, songket and tie-dye. The Indonesian Fashion Chamber (IFC) described these crafts as a sustainable foundation for Indonesian modest fashion's identity. Ali Charisma, Itang Yunasz and Wignyo, all designers and IKRA board members, showed their latest collections alongside guest designers from 10 countries.

Beyond the runway, trade shows, masterclasses, industry forums and a buyer program connected the showcase with international wholesale and retail markets. The event's theme was "Indonesia's Integrated Modest Fashion Ecosystem: Transforming Modest Fashion Brands into Global Business."

The program also included the Indonesian Modest Fashion Trend Forecasting 2027/2028 seminar. The Ministry of Creative Economy backed the initiative to promote traditional textiles and strengthen designers' intellectual property protection, while the Ministry of Tourism identified shopping tourism as a way the event could attract international visitors.

Building markets at home and abroad

Bank Indonesia, the Ministry of Trade, the IFC and other partners organized the event. Their roles span different parts of the industry: Bank Indonesia supports upstream development through IKRA, while the Trade Ministry helps businesses reach overseas buyers. According to the IFC, the collaboration strengthened links across the modest fashion value chain and Indonesia's position as a sourcing hub.

The Trade Ministry said its network of 46 overseas trade representatives facilitates online business matching between Indonesian fashion companies and buyers in export markets. At home, it is promoting partnerships with the Indonesian Retailers and Shopping Center Tenants Association (HIPPINDO) to get national fashion products into department stores and malls.

The ministry reported modest fashion exports of $5.97 billion for January–August 2026, a 2.89% increase from the same period a year earlier. Full-year exports in 2025 were $8.67 billion, up 3% from 2024.

Citing the State of the Global Islamic Economy (SGIE) 2025/26 report, the ministry said Muslim consumers worldwide spent $347 billion on clothing and footwear in 2024. The report projects that spending will reach $444 billion in 2029 and ranked Indonesia first globally in modest fashion in 2025.

Part of the wider ISEF program

The fashion event formed part of the 13th Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival (ISEF), which ran at the same venue on October 14–18, 2026. Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti and Deputy Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Dradjad Hari Wibowo opened the festival on October 14.

ISEF's theme was "Accelerating Sustainable Islamic Economic and Financial Growth through Synergy and Digital Transformation." Its more than 100 in-person and online activities brought together over 1,000 halal industry participants, including micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, Islamic financial institutions, creative businesses, and investors from Indonesia and abroad.

In opening remarks delivered by Dradjad, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto cited projected global Muslim consumer spending of $3.56 trillion by 2029 as an indication of the Islamic economy's potential.

Bank Indonesia also pointed to Indonesia's fourth-place overall ranking in the SGIE Report 2025/2026, distinct from its first-place modest fashion ranking. The central bank said the country's halal value chain expanded 5.5% year over year in the second quarter of 2026, faster than the national economy.

Festival attendance and transaction figures

According to the IFC release, ISEF had registered 93,252 visitors as of October 17, up 4% year over year. Retail sales stood at Rp13.85 billion, an increase of 44.09%, and business matching reached Rp3.16 trillion. These figures covered the wider festival, not just the fashion showcase.

Bank Indonesia reported that the Rp3.16 trillion in ISEF business matching transactions consisted of Rp2.6 trillion in sharia financing and Rp558.4 billion in sharia trade. It separately reported Rp6.05 trillion in cooperation commitments for sharia money and foreign exchange markets.

The central bank put ISEF attendance at approximately 93,000 and reported a combined mass-media and social-media reach of 26.5 million people.
