Squad evaluation and World Cup preparations
In a statement released Friday by Indonesia's football association, PSSI, Herdman explained the change: "Following the AFC Asian Cup delay and taking into account the escalating tensions in the Middle East, we have decided not to proceed with the previously planned matches in the region."
The Bali camp will bring together established national-team players and several newcomers as Indonesia prepares for the 2030 World Cup qualifiers. The program aims to expand the team's options across the squad, improve its play and establish a stronger foundation for future competition.
Herdman plans to assess players while working on their tactical understanding, teamwork and readiness. "This is an opportunity to evaluate their potential, deepen their understanding of tactics, and strengthen cooperation among players within the national team," he said.
PSSI said it hopes to use the November international window to keep preparations moving and make the Garuda squad more competitive at upcoming international events.
Herdman's first year in charge
The camp follows Indonesia's victory in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup on October 5, 2026. According to Wikipedia's account of Herdman's tenure, it was his first title as Indonesia coach. His team defeated Thailand 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the final at Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Stadium ended 2-2 after extra time.
Herdman's appointment covers both the senior national team and the under-23 side. Wikipedia records that he signed a two-year deal in December 2025, with an option for another two years, to begin work in January 2026. He was formally introduced as coach of both teams on January 3.
Asian Cup delay and regional disruptions
The Asian Football Confederation moved the Saudi Arabia-hosted 2027 Asian Cup from January 7-February 5, 2027, to December 23, 2027-January 21, 2028, according to the Associated Press, as published by ABC News. The AFC said it would submit the revised dates to FIFA for approval, which is needed to make clubs worldwide release players for national-team duty during that period.
The postponement followed recent deadly attacks on Saudi Arabia by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. AP characterized the Asian Cup as the largest sporting event postponed amid the Middle East conflict.
The monthlong competition was scheduled to bring 24 teams to eight venues in Riyadh, Jeddah and Khobar. AP noted that the delay raised questions about whether Saudi Arabia, which will also host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, was currently safe enough to stage a major international tournament.
Other competitions have also been affected by the regional security situation, AP reported. The Saudi Formula 1 Grand Prix was canceled for the season, while the Bahrain race was moved to Malaysia. The WTA Finals women's tennis tournament was relocated from Saudi Arabia to Indian Wells, California.
The AFC Champions League Elite also faced disruption, including the delay of an Al-Nassr match following a security alert from Saudi Civil Defense.
