LaLaLa Festival celebrates 10 years with Jakarta edition and regional expansion plans
LaLaLa Festival reaches a significant milestone this year, celebrating its 10th anniversary with an ambitious Jakarta edition that reflects the event's transformation from an experimental forest gathering to a regional music festival brand.
The festival launched in 2016 in Cikole, Bandung, West Java, where the city's reputation as Indonesia's creative hub and its thriving independent music scene since the 1990s provided fertile ground for the innovative concept. The original setting combined live music with an immersive outdoor experience, featuring trees, mist, art installations and the sense of temporary escape that became the festival's signature identity.
From Bandung to Jakarta: Evolution and Growth
After relocating to Jakarta in 2024, the festival has steadily expanded its scope and ambitions. The 2026 edition, scheduled for Aug. 22-23 at the Jakarta International Expo in Central Jakarta, features four stages alongside installations and festival attractions. The 44,000-square-meter venue, which has hosted major events since opening in 1992, provides the scale needed for the festival's growth.
Star-Studded Anniversary Lineup
The lineup demonstrates LaLaLa's elevated status in the regional festival circuit. Three-time Grammy-winning American rock band The Flaming Lips, known for their theatrical performances featuring confetti, balloons and frontman Wayne Coyne's distinctive space bubble, headlines the alternative-pop focused event. The veteran psychedelic act, formed in 1983, brings decades of acclaimed live performance experience to the anniversary edition.
Joining them is Steve Lacy, whose recent commercial and critical success includes a 2023 Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album for 'Gemini Rights' and a Billboard Hot 100 number-one single 'Bad Habit' in 2022. Other international acts include Rex Orange County, whose 2022 album 'Who Cares?' debuted in the top 10 across multiple countries, Northern Irish indie band Two Door Cinema Club, whose platinum-certified 2010 debut 'Tourist History' established their international following, Kodaline, Flo and Jordan Rakei.
Curation Philosophy: Beyond Commercial Appeal
According to Moura Saffanah, marketing specialist at LaLaLa Festival, the curation philosophy extends beyond commercial appeal.
Our curation isn't only about how big an artist's name is or how strong their commercial appeal might be,
Regional Expansion into Southeast Asia
The festival's regional expansion into the Philippines marks another strategic step toward becoming a Southeast Asian festival brand. The Philippines offers an established market, with festivals like Wanderland Music & Arts Festival and Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival creating precedents for international artist bookings since the early 2010s.
LaLaLa's 10-year journey reflects broader trends in Indonesia's music festival industry, which experienced significant growth between 2016 and 2019. Major events like Djakarta Warehouse Project, We The Fest and Java Jazz Festival attracted hundreds of thousands of attendees annually during this period before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the sector, making the festival's survival and expansion particularly noteworthy.
While the original forest setting in Bandung no longer defines LaLaLa Festival, Saffanah emphasized that the core philosophy remains intact. The festival continues to offer something streaming algorithms cannot replicate: the element of surprise and discovery that comes from experiencing carefully curated live performances in a communal setting.
