Military-Plated Vehicles Parked in BNPB Lobby Amid KPK Operation

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) executed a sting operation at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, October 13, 2026, detaining several individuals for questioning in what marks the commission's 22nd such operation this year.

Multiple military-plated vehicles were observed parked in the BNPB building lobby following the operation, with military police personnel entering the facility. Security staff briefly prevented media crews from photographing the premises, though the specific purpose of the military police presence remained unclear as of Tuesday night.

KPK Chairman Confirms Operation

KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto, who was inaugurated to lead the commission in December 2024 by President Prabowo Subianto, confirmed the operation but declined to identify those detained or specify the corruption allegations under investigation.

A number of parties have been secured and are being questioned
Budiyanto stated when contacted Tuesday.

Background on KPK Sting Operations

The operation, known in Indonesia as an OTT (Operasi Tangkap Tangan or sting operation), is a law enforcement method designed to catch corruption perpetrators in the act. The KPK has employed this tactic with notable success since its establishment in December 2003 as an independent institution tasked with eradicating corruption. The commission achieved a 100 percent conviction rate in its first years of operation, earning international recognition for its thoroughness in investigating high-level targets.

Tuesday's raid represents part of an active enforcement pattern in 2026, though it falls well below the peak year of 2018, when the KPK conducted 30 sting operations. The commission operates with an annual budget of Rp 878.04 billion for 2026.

BNPB Response

BNPB Acting Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center Berton said he had no information about the operation.

We cannot provide any statements because we do not know anything yet
Berton explained, adding that office services had continued normally throughout the day with no signs of an operation until the evening.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency was established in 2008 to replace the National Coordinating Board for Disaster Management and operates under the direct authority of the President of Indonesia. The agency plays a central role in coordinating disaster response and mitigation efforts across the archipelago nation.

Chairman Budiyanto brings substantial anti-corruption experience to his current role, having previously served as Director of Investigation at the KPK in 2020 and as Inspector General at the Ministry of Agriculture before his appointment to lead the commission.

The KPK has not disclosed when it will release further details about the detained individuals or the nature of the alleged corruption at BNPB.
