Arrests and seizures in Kampung Vietnam

Six of those detained were Papua New Guinea nationals and four were Indonesian citizens, according to ANTARA Foto's report on the Kampung Vietnam raid.

In Kampung Vietnam, in Jayapura City's South Jayapura District, the joint team seized 10 kilograms of marijuana, two air rifles, an airsoft gun, sharp weapons and Singaraja-brand alcohol.

Papua Regional Police narcotics director Kombes Alfian said the operation began at 5 a.m. WIT, with personnel from Brimob, Sabhara, Ditpolairud and Polresta Jayapura taking part. Papua BNN head Brigjen Pol Anang Triwidiandoko also attended.

One suspect tried to escape into the sea but was caught. Officers took all the suspects and seized evidence to Papua Regional Police headquarters for further processing.

Earlier results from Operasi Sarang Narkoba

The raids were part of Operasi Sarang Narkoba, which Papua Regional Police launched on October 8, 2026. ANTARA News Papua reported that, by October 21, the operation had yielded seizures of 20 kilograms of marijuana, 164 grams of methamphetamine and 53 bottles of alcohol.

Police said they were continuing their investigation to identify the supply network, including drug kingpins in Papua.

Kampung Vietnam's history as a marijuana hotspot

Kampung Vietnam has long been identified as an entry point for marijuana from Papua New Guinea. Liputan6 reported on an August 2018 case in which a dealer there exchanged stolen motorcycles for marijuana from Papua New Guinea, receiving one kilogram per motorcycle.

At the time, police said motorcycles stolen in 50 percent of Jayapura's motorcycle thefts were exchanged for marijuana from Papua New Guinea. They also described a maritime smuggling route running from Kampung Vietnam on the Hamadi coast to Papua New Guinea waters.
